چکیده

Using CGS4 on UKIRT, we have obtained 2.00–2.45 μm infrared spectra of a number of low-mass X-ray binaries including Sco X-1, Sco X-2, and GX13+1. Sco X-1 shows emission lines only, supporting our previous conclusion that the spectral type of the evolved secondary must be earlier than G5. Emission lines are also seen in the spectrum of Sco X-2, confirming the identity of the IR counterpart. We report the detection of CO bands in GX13+1 and estimate the most likely spectral type of the secondary to be K5iii. We also find P Cygni type profiles in the Brackett γ lines of Sco X-1 and GX13+1, indicating the presence of high velocity outflows in these systems. We present spectra of candidate IR counterparts to several other elusive X-ray binaries. Finally, implications for the nature and classification of these systems are discussed.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

N ov 2 00 8 A variable near - infrared counterpart to the neutron - star low - mass X - ray binary 4 U 1705 − 440 1

We report the discovery of a near-infrared (nIR) counterpart to the persistent neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1705−440, at a location consistent with its recently determined Chandra X-ray position. The nIR source is highly variable, with Ks-band magnitudes varying between 15.2 and 17.3 and additional Jand H-band observations revealing color variations. A comparison with contemporaneous X...

Parallel tracks in infrared versus X-ray emission in black hole X-ray transient outbursts: a hysteresis effect?

We report the discovery of a new hysteresis effect in black hole X-ray binary state transitions, that of the near-infrared (NIR) flux (which most likely originates in the jets) versus X-ray flux. We find, looking at existing data sets, that the infrared emission of black hole X-ray transients appears to be weaker in the low/hard state rise of an outburst than the low/hard state decline of an ou...

Phase - resolved spectroscopy of the low - mass X - ray binaries 1636 - 536 / V 801 Arae and 1735 - 444 / V 926 Scorpii ?

We present phase-resolved spectroscopy of the optical counterparts V 801 Ara and V 926 Sco of the low-mass X-ray binaries 1636-536 and 1735-444. To assist in the interpretation of the spectroscopic observations we derive new ephemerides for the photometric variations of both sources. Superior conjunction of the line emission region occurs at photometric phase ∼0.7 in both sources, which indicat...

X-ray Spectroscopy of Accretion Disks and Stellar Winds in X-Ray Binaries

From hot, tenuous gas dominated by Compton processes, to warm, photoionized emission-line regions, to cold, optically thick fluorescing matter, accreting gas flows in X-ray binaries span a huge portion of the parameter space accessible to astrophysical plasmas. The coexistence of such diverse states of material within small volumes (10–10 cm) leaves X-ray spectroscopists with a challenging set ...
